About the Role

The Centre for Effective Altruism is hiring a Development Officer for the Animal Welfare Fund (AWF). In this new role, you will build and run the AWF’s major donor fundraising, developing the strategy and managing high-net-worth relationships. This is an individual contributor position with significant autonomy and the opportunity to grow into management.

What You'll Do

  • Co-develop the AWF’s major donor fundraising strategy with the Chair, covering donor segmentation, gift levels, acquisition, and portfolio growth.
  • Build and maintain testing frameworks to evaluate gift programs and incorporate data-driven insights into strategy.
  • Stay current with the AWF’s programs, grantmaking strategy, and theory of change to ensure fundraising reflects mission and impact.
  • Own the donor cultivation process, ensuring active and intentional engagement with clear journey mapping.
  • Develop and maintain individualized engagement plans for donors across the portfolio.
  • Ensure donors have an outstanding experience at every touchpoint, feeling informed, appreciated, and connected to impact.
  • Support the Chair in preparing for donor interactions with briefings, talking points, and follow-up plans.
  • Build the AWF’s donor engagement infrastructure from the ground up, including the CRM and other systems.
  • Own the CRM, maintaining clean data, tracking engagement, and building reporting infrastructure.
  • Lead on drafting all donor-facing written communications, including impact reports, funding proposals, and updates.
  • Review donor communications to ensure they clearly articulate mission, strategy, impact, and are compelling.
  • Support development and execution of specific fundraising initiatives, such as thesis-driven funds.
  • Identify and develop new fundraising approaches aligned with the AWF’s philanthropic operating model.
  • Translate fundraising strategy into concrete plans, timelines, and workstreams.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure strategies are consistently translated into practice.
  • Manage multiple fundraising initiatives simultaneously, proactively flagging priority or timeline shifts.
  • Manage up effectively, keeping stakeholders informed without requiring close oversight.
  • Potentially directly manage relationships with a portfolio of donors, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in major gift fundraising or high-net-worth relationship management, with a track record of cultivating and closing significant gifts.
  • Skilled project manager who can define scope, set timelines, and deliver high-quality work across multiple workstreams.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, able to keep everything on track without requiring close oversight.
  • Exceptional writer and communicator, able to produce donor-facing content that is precise, credible, and compelling.
  • Comfortable with CRM systems and data management, keeps records clean and uses data to inform strategy.
  • Genuinely excited about the potential for strategic philanthropy to reduce animal suffering at scale.
  • Clear and rigorous thinker with strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Thrives in a fast-moving environment, adapts quickly, and takes initiative without waiting for direction.
