The Design Engineer will play a key role at Ashby by combining design and engineering expertise to solve complex product challenges. You'll own projects from research to implementation, improve the user experience, and help scale a high-quality design system used across the company.
What You'll Do
- Tackle Ashby's most challenging design problems
- Expand and enhance the in-house design system
- Consult on bespoke design work across the company
- Redesign mobile web app based on customer feedback and usage patterns
- Wireframe new user flows and implement them using the design system
- Build flexible, composable components in the design system (e.g., autocompletes with filters and record creation)
- Improve other engineers' designs in terms of information hierarchy and scannability
- Research customer problems and drive solutions from concept to implementation
- Write product specs and build wireframes for new features
- Implement end-to-end solutions in code
- Communicate progress and pull in support from designers, product managers, or infrastructure teams as needed
- Ship product changes during onboarding that increase in scope and ambiguity
- Deliver a prominent, impactful feature within the first three months
What We're Looking For
- Ability to design and build software simultaneously
- Experience solving customer problems through end-to-end product development
- Strong design skills with ability to create wireframes and prototypes
- Proficiency in implementing UI with modern component-based frameworks
- Experience working with or contributing to a design system
- Ability to work with minimal process and high ownership
- Strong communication skills to collaborate across time zones and functions
- Comfort with pair programming and collaborative technical work
- Ability to write product and technical specifications
- Experience working in a fast-paced, autonomous engineering environment
Nice to Have
- Experience with TypeScript, React, GraphQL, Node.js, Postgres, or Redis
- Background in typed languages
- Prior experience switching programming languages or platforms
- Familiarity with developer tooling and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience building analytics modeling, policy engines, or workflow engines
