The Design Engineer, Americas will tackle Ashby's most challenging design problems, enhance the company's in-house design system, and collaborate closely with engineers to improve product designs. This role blends design thinking with technical implementation, enabling you to prototype in code, implement reusable components, and deliver solutions grounded in real logic and user needs.
What You'll Do
- Redesign mobile web app by engaging with frequent users, wireframing new flows, implementing design system components, and turning wireframes into functional reality
- Build flexible, composable components in the design system to enable other engineers to create custom autocompletes with filters, record creation options, and more
- Consult with engineers to improve designs, particularly in areas like information hierarchy and scannability (e.g., candidate assessment views)
- Own projects end-to-end: research problems, write product specs, create wireframes, and implement solutions
- Collaborate with Product Managers who provide problem briefs and strategy, while engineers drive execution
- Pull in Designers and Infrastructure teams as needed and push relevant information to stakeholders proactively
- Improve common components (e.g., analytics modeling, policy engine, workflow engine, design system) so enhancements cascade across the application
- Participate in natural collaboration and deliberate communication practices, including written proposals and asynchronous feedback
- Attend in-person team and company gatherings at least twice a year
- Use research, prototyping, and written documentation to anticipate challenges and gather cross-timezone feedback
What We're Looking For
- Ability to design and build software, combining design thinking with engineering implementation
- Experience iterating on design ideas in code, using actual logic and data in prototypes
- Proven track record of driving customer problems to creative and effective solutions with minimal oversight
- Strong ownership mindset: capable of running projects independently from problem to solution
- Excellent communication skills to keep stakeholders informed and pull in help when needed
- Experience with React component systems and cascading design changes across applications
- Fundamental engineering skills in debugging and building abstractions
- Fast learner, especially when adapting to new languages and systems
