Role Overview
As the Cost Control Manager, you will lead financial oversight for data center construction projects from initiation through completion. Your primary responsibility is to ensure all project expenditures align with contractual agreements, internal budgets, and financial reporting standards. You will serve as a key liaison between project management, contractors, finance, and external vendors, maintaining rigorous cost discipline across a high-value project portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret construction contracts to ensure ongoing compliance with legal and financial requirements.
- Evaluate contractors’ requests to award subcontractor agreements, assess cost implications, and advise project teams on procurement decisions and cost-saving opportunities.
- Conduct monthly reviews of contractor pay applications, verifying alignment with the schedule of values, validating supporting documentation, and reconciling budget adjustments as needed.
- Issue purchase orders and verify vendor invoices against agreed terms, ensuring accuracy and compliance before processing.
- Collect and analyze monthly cash flow forecasts from contractors, compare actual expenditures to projections, and distribute updated financial outlooks to investment and capital planning teams.
- Assess potential change order events by reviewing contract terms and cost data, then provide clear, documented recommendations to support decision-making.
- Maintain a comprehensive change order log, track approvals through internal workflows, manage legal review when required, and uphold delegation of authority protocols.
- Support finance operations during loan draw cycles by gathering and validating required documentation from contractors and subcontractors.
- Lead regular coordination meetings with construction managers, internal teams, and consultants to review payment requests, documentation status, and change order progress, ensuring adherence to project timelines.
- Oversee third-party cost auditing or change management firms assigned to projects and ensure their work meets organizational standards.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to Cost Engineers, fostering professional development and strengthening internal capabilities.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in construction management, finance, or accounting is required, or equivalent professional experience. You must have at least seven years of experience in construction or project management, with deep familiarity in contract interpretation and change order processes. Leadership experience and the ability to mentor team members are essential. Proficiency with financial and project management platforms such as Workday, e-Builder, Procore, and Autodesk Construction Cloud is expected. Ten or more years of relevant experience and prior management roles are preferred.
