MCD Global Health is looking for a Controller to join our mission-driven organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), you will be accountable for the oversight of all corporate and project finance, accounting, and financial reporting activities for our $35M organization.
What You'll Do
- Manage all finance operations, including accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP, FASB standards for nonprofits, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with industry best practices, government regulations, and departmental policies.
- Prepare and present accurate financial reports to senior leadership and the Board, analyzing data and communicating financial statuses.
- Lead the annual budgeting process, comparing actual results to plans and identifying variances for corrective action.
- Conduct risk assessments, coordinate all audit activities, and serve as the primary point of contact with auditors.
- Review annual corporate insurance policy renewals to ensure appropriate coverage.
- Supervise finance staff, providing guidance, feedback, and performance assessments.
- Work closely with project leaders to train them in finance and accounting procedures.
- Oversee all financial, project, and grants accounting functions, ensuring expenditures align with budgets.
- Prepare, submit, and negotiate the annual NICRA proposal.
- Manage organizational cash flow forecasting and act as the primary liaison with banking institutions.
- Oversee the investment account(s) of the organization.
- Accountable for recruitment of direct and indirect reports and promoting a positive work environment.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and GAAP.
- Experience leading and running operationally effective teams with multiple functional areas.
- Minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of USG Rules and Regulations, including FAR and 2CFR200.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in preparing and submitting/negotiating NICRAs to the USG.
- Nonprofit experience is required.
- Demonstrated experience leading financial management, accounting, coordinating audits, and managing reporting, budget development, AP/AR, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
- Demonstrated track record in grants management for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
- Technologically savvy with advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
- Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills for strategic data interpretation.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for presenting to senior management, board, or partners.
- Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels.
Nice to Have
- A CPA or similar certification is strongly preferred.
- An MBA is also strongly preferred.
- Strong preference for experience in a fast-growing nonprofit environment with limited budgets and resources.
- Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and QuickBooks is a plus.

Team & Environment
You will lead the Finance and Accounting team, which consists of 5-6 staff members. You will have 2 direct reports and report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary range: $104,000 - $130,000 per year.
Work Mode
This is a hybrid role. Candidates can work remotely, hybrid, or from our office in Hallowell, Maine, United States.
