Burkland Associates is hiring a Controller

Burkland Associates is looking for a Controller to partner with venture-backed startup clients, guiding them from financial process mapping to system implementation. You will be responsible for managing monthly and yearly financial closes, overseeing accountants and processes, and supporting a diverse portfolio of clients from Seed stage through Series C.

What You'll Do

• Implement processes and systems for clients, from mapping needs and choosing a system to setup and implementation.
• Facilitate client meetings and oversee monthly and yearly financial closes.
• Support startup clients who need Controller-level help but may not have an internal team.
• Manage accountants and processes for clients and potentially internally.
• Context shift, communicate, prioritize, and evaluate needs across a variety of clients.
• Embrace the agile and scrappy nature of startup environments.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Over 5 years of progressive experience and a background as a Controller.
• Passion for helping venture-backed startups succeed.
• Background in management and experience overseeing the work product of others.
• A natural collaborator who asks for and gives feedback regularly.
• Familiarity with GAAP, ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition), and ASC 842 (Lease Accounting).
• A naturally curious problem-solver who likes to learn and take on new challenges.
• A communicator at your core who leads with integrity and takes initiative.
• An acutely accurate approach with analytical thinking.
• Experience building and overseeing accounting processes for full cycle accounting.
• Expertise in financial statement analysis, chart of accounts review, and cost of goods sold guidance.
• Prior client-facing experience.
• Preparation of financial statements, reports, and presentations.
• Experience with accounting for intercompany activity, financial statement consolidations, and unrealized gains/losses.
• Familiarity with equity accounting and reconciliations for stock and convertible notes.
• Knowledge of the financial due diligence process.

Nice to Have

• Additional customer or client service experience.
• CPA or CMA certification.

This is a remote-first company with over 180 team members. You will work with a variety of startup clients, providing expert financial guidance.
