This role supports small and medium enterprises in the energy access sector through targeted advisory services across key programs including Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO), Kenya Cold Chain Accelerator (K-CCA), and Energy Catalyst (ECAP). The Consultant strengthens enterprise capacity by guiding business strategy, financial modeling, and market expansion efforts in developing markets.
What You'll Do
- Deliver tailored technical assistance to growing energy-focused businesses, enhancing operations, supply chains, and last-mile distribution models
- Develop financial models, assess unit economics, and prepare companies for investment readiness
- Support capital-raising activities, including investor engagement, pitch development, and data-room setup
- Advise on sales, marketing, and business development strategies to improve customer acquisition and revenue performance
- Guide product development, technology testing, and performance evaluation for energy solutions
- Strengthen organizational leadership, governance, and team structures within client enterprises
- Provide guidance on regulatory compliance and market-entry requirements
- Design and oversee field trials, define impact KPIs, and support monitoring frameworks
- Conduct market assessments, competitive analysis, and sector mapping to inform strategy
- Lead research activities including surveys, focus groups, key informant interviews, and site visits
- Analyze commercial viability, technology performance, and customer impact
- Produce case studies, research reports, and knowledge products to capture insights
- Translate findings into actionable recommendations for programming, policy, and investment
- Coordinate monthly grantee meetings under PREO, track progress, manage risks, and oversee timelines
- Supervise contractor-led technical assignments such as feasibility studies and go-to-market strategies
- Develop and deliver strategic toolkits and implementation plans for ECAP and K-CCA in areas including supply chain, financial modeling, and investor engagement
- Prepare public-facing reports, communication materials, and social media content
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of experience in early-stage venture development and capital raising
- Proven background in one or more of the following: agricultural productivity technologies, off-grid electrification, clean cooking solutions, last-mile distribution, or climate-smart energy systems
- Demonstrated ability to support monitoring and evaluation frameworks and define key performance indicators
- Graduate or postgraduate degree in Business, Economics, Finance, International Development, Energy, Engineering, or a related field
- Strong understanding of the off-grid energy sector and impact investing, particularly in African markets
- Experience advising startups and SMEs through growth challenges
- Ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously and deliver under tight deadlines
- Established network within the energy access ecosystem, including entrepreneurs, investors, and donors
- Capacity to mentor founders and co-develop technical and commercial solutions
- Proficiency in reviewing and refining financial models
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of producing high-quality reports and analyses
- Fluency in English required
Work Mode
This is a remote position open to candidates in Africa. Applicants must be located within three hours of East Africa Time (UTC+3) to ensure adequate overlap with regional working hours.
