This role provides strategic and technical leadership for the Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO) program, aimed at accelerating clean energy adoption through locally-led enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The consultant will support program delivery by strengthening the capacity of grantees, refining monitoring and evaluation systems, and contributing to knowledge dissemination and communications.
What You'll Do
You will collaborate with program leadership to ensure PREO meets its objectives, guiding the design and implementation of technical assistance for energy-focused small and medium enterprises. This includes supporting the identification and onboarding of innovative grantees, leading due diligence, and preparing investment memos for funding decisions. You will help shape monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) frameworks, ensure data quality, and track progress against impact indicators.
You will lead or support technical assignments such as feasibility assessments, financial readiness, market entry strategies, and supply chain analysis. You will also contribute to public-facing reports, donor communications, newsletters, and presentations. Coordination with internal teams and external partners—including Carbon Trust and donor agencies—will be essential to align strategy, reporting, and outreach.
Requirements
- Minimum of seven years of experience in energy access, enterprise development, or donor-funded programs, preferably in Africa or similar markets
- Proven background in designing and managing regranting initiatives and technical assistance for early-stage innovators
- Experience supporting investment readiness, financial modeling, and business development for off-grid or rural enterprises
- Demonstrated ability to design MEL systems, analyze data, and produce actionable insights
- Strong communication skills with experience in knowledge product development and stakeholder engagement
- Familiarity with impact investing, donor compliance, and climate resilience programming
- Postgraduate degree in a relevant field such as energy, development, finance, or environmental studies
- Fluency in English and ability to work across multicultural teams
- Willingness to travel internationally and adapt to evolving program needs
