Responsibilities
- Serves as subject matter expert in the civil structural design areas. As the subject matter expert, the individual is expected to be capable of resolving technical issues, coordinating discussion with interdisciplinary stakeholders, and working with the management team to identify project impacts.
- Works on highly complex tasks in multiple and diverse areas and proposes innovative design solutions requiring a significant amount of independent judgment.
- Works on developing the technical expertise required to bring in advances technical capabilities in house as deemed beneficial and strategic for NuScale.
- Uses structural engineering tools and implements appropriate standards to design Nuclear Safety-Related and Non-Safety-Related structures including post-processing analytical results and designing structures for various material types (concrete, steel, etc).
- Interfaces with NuScale Licensing in support of domestic and international regulatory efforts.
- Interacts with other disciplines and structural engineering consultants in an effort to allow effective coordination of design activities and resolution of technical problems.
- Individuals should possess or acquire general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields in order to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Provides guidance and mentoring to other staff members in support of the team’s technical activities.
- Develops and reviews requirements documents, methodology documents, design reports, and studies.
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills and routinely interacts with contractors and/or regulatory bodies.
- Interacts with co-workers and other disciplines to promote effective coordination of design activities and resolution of technical problems. Individuals should be interested in acquiring general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields in order to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A minimum of a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited school
- Minimum of 12 years of full-time, highly relevant experience as a Structural Design Engineer
- Extensive use and understanding of ANSYS
- Must have in-depth understanding of engineering concepts, principles, theories, strong technical writing skills as well as good communication, computer, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills and ability to manage complex projects with multiple work phases
- Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
Nice to Have
- An advanced degree
- A registered professional engineer license (P.E.)
- Additional experience in the following areas: Design and analysis of structures, including concrete and steel, use of design software and finite element method analyses.
- Working with the following codes: ASCE 43, ASCE 4, ACI 349 & 318, ASCE 7, IBC, and AISC N690, Steel Construction Manual and Seismic Design Manual.
- Computer programing skills (e.g. Matlab, or Python)
