As Chief Engineer, you will lead the operation and maintenance of all mechanical systems aboard fishing vessels navigating the Bering Sea. This role is essential to the vessel’s safety, efficiency, and operational continuity during extended offshore trips. You will ensure all machinery functions reliably in challenging conditions and oversee critical technical operations from engine performance to fuel management.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance on all onboard mechanical and electrical systems
- Supervise refueling procedures and manage safe fuel transfer operations
- Diagnose and complete repairs promptly to minimize downtime
- Maintain accurate logs of all maintenance and repair activities
- Monitor and track procurement of parts, equipment, and technical supplies
Work Environment
Work takes place entirely at sea, primarily in remote areas of the Bering Sea, often several days from the nearest port. Trips typically last 4–5 weeks, though durations can vary from 10 days to over 60 days. Crew members complete multiple trips per rotation, which may span two months or more. Engineers work 16-hour shifts, seven days a week, during active operations.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation is structured to reward performance and experience. Officers receive either a guaranteed daily rate—set by the VP of Operations—or a share of the crew earnings, whichever is higher. A total of 40% of net adjusted sales is distributed among officers and crew, with net sales adjusted for key operating costs such as fuel, bait, and observer expenses.
All travel related to deployment is fully covered by the company. This includes round-trip flights, lodging, and meals during transit. Officers are not responsible for any travel-related expenses.
