About the Role

Penguin Random House LLC is seeking a Book Production Editor to join its Corporate Bookmaking team. In this role, you will support the Random House Publishing Group and oversee a diverse range of titles—from original works to hardcover-to-paperback conversions—from manuscript to finished book.

What You'll Do

  • Handle production editorial work for original titles (both 1-color and 4-color) and conversions across many genres and formats.
  • Hire and manage freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers, reviewing their work through all passes.
  • Clear manuscripts post-copyediting and collate changes from authors, licensors, and freelancers in page proofs.
  • Perform quality checks on ebook files.
  • Copyedit jacket/cover copy and additional material, and proofread jackets, covers, and captions.
  • Code and tag manuscripts in Microsoft Word for design and composition.
  • Collaborate with production, design, and managing editorial departments to maintain book schedules.

What We're Looking For

  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a trade-book production editor in house, within trade or educational publishing.
  • Strong copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills.
  • Detailed familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style and facility with modern copyediting practices.
  • Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently, set deadlines, and meet them.
  • Capable of rising to a challenge and comfortable asking for help when needed.
  • Expertise with electronic copyediting using Microsoft Word.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat PDF markup tools.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working on 4-color books and familiarity with or interest in licensed publishing.
