About the Role

The American Cancer Society is hiring an Associate Chief of Staff for the Chief Legal and Risk Officer (CLRO). This role is central to supporting the CLRO in leading the legal and risk management functions for our organization, which is dedicated to ending cancer for everyone. You'll oversee a broad portfolio, coordinate strategic initiatives, and liaise with senior leadership, legal teams, and external partners to ensure objectives are met efficiently.

What You'll Do

  • Facilitate the completion of projects initiated by the CLRO, creating and managing timelines, tracking progress, and ensuring accountability for deliverables.
  • Develop the strategic plan, goals, objectives, metrics, and KPIs to monitor legal and risk-related activities, tracking key milestones and providing regular updates.
  • Facilitate key leaders in the development and review of legal policies, compliance frameworks, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Organize and support meetings, including agenda setting, note-taking, and follow-up actions.
  • Streamline internal and external communications related to legal and risk initiatives.
  • Develop and prepare reports, briefing materials, and presentations for senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders.
  • Support the coordination of external reviews, audits, and legal assessments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the legal and risk management functions.

What We're Looking For

  • A minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in legal affairs, risk management, or a related field within a nonprofit, corporate, or similar environment.
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) or bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of legal frameworks, compliance, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work strategically and tactically in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency with project management tools, Microsoft Office 365, MS Teams, and legal or compliance management systems.
  • Action-oriented with a high level of professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
  • Ability to influence and build consensus across diverse organizational stakeholders.

  • Advanced legal or risk management certifications.

  • Salary: $92,000 to $110,000
