Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is hiring an AI (Artificial Intelligence) Infrastructure Architect

Responsibilities

  • Identify inefficiencies in current operations and recommend solutions powered by artificial intelligence.
  • Use automation expertise to improve workflows, monitoring, and configuration management for AI platforms and tools.
  • Design and build scalable AI infrastructure and pipelines that support business objectives.
  • Ensure all AI infrastructure projects adhere to established security standards in coordination with cybersecurity teams.
  • Assess and adopt new AI technologies, including MLOps systems and model optimization tools, to strengthen infrastructure.
  • Track performance of AI systems, detect performance constraints, and apply fixes to maintain scalability and efficiency.
  • Carry out additional tasks as needed by management.
  • Lead the end-to-end development of AI system architectures, from planning and design to deployment and optimization.
  • Guide and educate team members to strengthen organizational AI capabilities.

Requirements

  • Proven background in designing and deploying AI infrastructure.
  • Capable of working effectively with AI engineers, developers, IT staff, and leadership.
  • History of identifying operational challenges and delivering AI-based solutions.
  • Skilled in automating workflows, monitoring, and configurations for AI environments.
  • Able to create AI infrastructure that supports strategic business goals.
  • Experience ensuring AI systems comply with security policies.
  • Familiar with evaluating and incorporating new AI tools such as MLOps and model optimization frameworks.
  • Skilled in monitoring infrastructure performance and enhancing reliability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.

Nice to Have

  • Demonstrated experience managing the full lifecycle of AI system architectures, from requirements to optimization.
  • Background mentoring colleagues and promoting AI knowledge across teams.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid — Livermore, CA

Position Level

  • This role may be filled at either SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
  • Additional duties will be assigned for the SES.4 level.

Work Flexibility

  • Hybrid work schedule available, combining on-site and remote work.
  • Eligible to work from home one or more days per week.

Organizational Placement

  • Position is part of the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) Division within the Computing Directorate.
  • Supports the LivIT Systems Networks & Technologies Program Area.
