DevOps is a culture and practice focused on CI/CD, automation, and dev-ops collaboration. SRE (coined by Google) is a discipline focused on reliability engineering with error budgets, SLOs, and treating operations as a software problem. In practice, job titles overlap significantly. Focus on the actual responsibilities listed, not the label. Both require strong coding and systems skills, with SRE roles typically emphasizing reliability metrics more heavily.
Start with Linux fundamentals (get comfortable on the command line). Learn Docker and basic cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure free tiers). Set up CI/CD for a personal project using GitHub Actions or GitLab CI. Get certified (AWS/GCP certs carry weight for entry-level). Many DevOps engineers transition from sysadmin, support, or development roles—operational experience in any form helps as a foundation.
Increasingly yes, especially at medium and large companies. But don't learn Kubernetes first—understand Docker, networking, and cloud basics before tackling orchestration. Many smaller companies run on simpler stacks (ECS, serverless, plain VMs). That said, Kubernetes knowledge significantly expands your job options globally. Start with containerization basics, then move to orchestration.
AWS Solutions Architect and/or GCP Professional Cloud Architect are most recognized globally. Kubernetes certifications (CKA, CKAD) matter for K8s-heavy roles. Terraform Associate is valuable for infrastructure-as-code positions. Certifications matter most for entry-level and enterprise roles; startups care more about demonstrable skills. Don't collect certs—get one or two relevant ones and build real projects that showcase your abilities.
