Prematch is hiring a Wilderness Operations Assistant (Winter Season) to support the Wilderness Education Program within Yosemite National Park and the Yosemite Conservancy's Ostrander Ski Hut. You will play a key role in connecting visitors to the park by managing wilderness permits and providing expert guidance.
What You'll Do
- Operate the Wilderness Permit Reservation System on behalf of the National Park Service using Recreation.gov software.
- Review and process wilderness permit lotteries and reservations with a thorough understanding of wilderness trails and regulations.
- Communicate complex and sometimes sensitive information to the public over phone, helpdesk, and email, delivering outstanding customer service.
- Advise visitors on trip planning and navigating the permit system, including lotteries for wilderness and Half Dome permits.
- Provide specific Leave No Trace (LNT) and Preventative Search And Rescue (PSAR) messaging regarding conditions, closures, and regulations.
- Serve as an expert point of contact for NPS Wilderness personnel using Recreation.gov software.
- Occasionally patrol trails on foot, ski, or snowshoe to increase familiarity with wilderness areas and report field conditions.
- Monitor multiple online resources for accuracy and accessibility, moderating content.
- Support the maintenance of the Bear Canister Rental program.
- Record revenue and daily visitor contacts for reports.
- Provide trip planning assistance to guests of the Ostrander Ski Hut.
What We're Looking For
- High School Diploma.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- At least one year of relevant experience.
- Hiring contingent on successful completion of a government background check.

Team & Environment
You'll join a team of up to five members, reporting directly to the Director of Wilderness Operations. The role involves close collaboration with National Park Service (NPS) Wilderness Rangers.
Benefits & Compensation
- Compensation: $20 per hour commensurate with experience.
- Housing may be available.
- 40 hours of sick leave is included for the season.
Work Mode
This is an onsite position based at the Yosemite Valley Wilderness Center in Yosemite National Park.
