As a Kitchen Steward, you play a vital role in maintaining the hygiene and operational efficiency of all galley areas and food production spaces across the vessel. Your primary responsibility is to uphold rigorous sanitation standards in line with public health requirements and company protocols, ensuring a safe and functional environment for all kitchen operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and follow established cleaning schedules across all food preparation and storage zones according to shipboard procedures.
- Keep galley storage spaces, including lockers and utility areas, clean and organized, using approved chemical agents and safety practices.
- Distribute cleaning supplies and chemicals daily, ensuring proper handling, usage tracking, and secure storage.
- Maintain all cleaning tools and dishwashing equipment in optimal working condition, reporting any faults or needed repairs to the Executive Chef.
- Support the Chef de Cuisine by assisting in the creation and monitoring of maintenance and repair work orders.
- Oversee waste sorting and disposal in compliance with environmental and operational guidelines.
- Supervise and train galley staff in proper cleaning techniques and equipment care, fostering consistency and accountability.
- Ensure all kitchen outlets and adjacent zones remain compliant with health and safety standards at all times.
- Stay informed about scheduled culinary events—such as cooking demonstrations and galley tours—to support timely setup and presentation.
- Collaborate with the provisions team during supply loading operations and keep leadership informed of overnight cleaning progress and any operational concerns.
Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 21 years old and bring proven experience in a luxury hospitality or fine dining setting, preferably in a stewarding or hotel operations role. Fluency in English is essential for clear communication with management and team members. You should have prior experience leading multicultural teams and be adaptable, resilient, and committed to exceptional service.
Attention to personal presentation and hygiene is critical. You must demonstrate thorough knowledge of public health policies and procedures. Tattoos must not be visible while in uniform. Familiarity with additional languages and strong administrative abilities—including proficiency in PC-based databases, spreadsheets, and word processing—are considered strong advantages.
Work Environment & Benefits
This is an onboard position with full-time, contract-based employment aboard Viking Ocean Cruises vessels. The role follows a 10-hour daily schedule with legal work status provided.
