Responsibilities
- Assess risk for employer groups and set appropriate pricing for level-funded health plans.
- Work with the Sales team to develop competitive proposals that win business while maintaining profitability.
- Evaluate risk factors and make data-driven decisions that balance risk tolerance with growth objectives.
- Contribute to the design and improvement of underwriting guidelines, processes, and tools as the company scales.
- Partner with Product, Actuarial, and Customer Success teams to enhance the overall customer experience.
- Monitor underwriting results and market trends to guide ongoing pricing and risk management strategies.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of underwriting experience, preferably with small groups or level-funded products.
- Solid knowledge of health insurance pricing, risk assessment, and underwriting guidelines.
- Comfortable taking calculated risks to support business goals, especially in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Strong communication skills to explain underwriting decisions to non-technical audiences.
- Highly collaborative and proactive, able to build effective relationships across Sales, Actuarial, and other teams.
- Thrives in ambiguous situations and maintains a continuous improvement mindset.
- Proficient in data analysis using tools like Excel.
Nice to Have
- Experience at an insurtech, carrier, or TPA focused on the small group market.
- Familiarity with underwriting automation tools or systems.
