Umbra is hiring a Systems Engineering Manager to lead our Mission Solutions systems engineering group. You will oversee personnel who architect, design, build, test, and operate our advanced satellite and space mission technology. In this role, you will drive new technology development and lead engineers through the program lifecycle from concept to delivery.
What You'll Do
- Establish and maintain systems engineering technical excellence within Mission Solutions.
- Lead, contribute, and support the systems engineering group through the full program lifecycle.
- Contribute to and review proposal submissions for technical accuracy.
- Provide functional management of technical staff, including coordinating departmental efforts, conducting one-on-ones and performance reviews, and guiding professional development.
- Manage team workload, assignments, support, and conflict resolution.
- Ensure compliance with legal regulations, security standards, and company policies.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency.
- Collaborate on program staffing forecasts and recruiting, including headcount planning and hiring.
- Work closely with project and technical leads to understand scope of work for high-quality execution.
- Develop resource basis of estimates for proposals and department growth.
- Use agile practices to support sprint planning, track progress, and manage individual performance.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or a related STEM field.
- 8+ years of professional experience in systems engineering or a related field.
- 3+ years of professional experience in direct personnel management.
- 3+ years of professional experience in project management.
- 3+ years of professional experience in space mission systems engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and support a team of engineers.
- Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, and dynamic environment.
Nice to Have
- 10+ years of professional experience in systems engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in direct personnel management.
- 5+ years of experience in project management.
- 5+ years of experience in space mission systems engineering.
- Experience with agile project management practices and tools, such as scrum, SAFe and Jira.
- Experience with traditional project management practices and tools, such as critical path analysis, resource loading and MS Project.
- Experience with the full program lifecycle including systems engineering, software, and hardware deliverables.
