Ashby is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Product Engineering, Americas

About the Role

Ashby is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its Product Engineering team in the Americas. You will take full ownership of critical product areas, drive innovation, and deliver high-quality software that solves real problems for Talent Acquisition teams at companies with tens of thousands of daily active users.

What You'll Do

  • Take ownership over a large portion of one of Ashby's products
  • Own projects end-to-end, including responsibilities traditionally held by product and design roles
  • Research competitors and customer needs to inform product development
  • Write product specifications for new features
  • Create wireframes and design interfaces
  • Build and ship features across the full technology stack
  • Design and implement reusable building blocks and abstractions
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to vet decisions and keep them informed
  • Work with other engineers to deliver projects successfully
  • Participate in customer issue investigations and support
  • Contribute to technical and product strategy within their domain
  • Prototype ideas and validate solutions with users
  • Make technology choices and evaluate new infrastructure when necessary

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience tackling projects with significant product and technical ambiguity
  • Ability to work across the entire technology stack (frontend, backend, infrastructure)
  • Strong product sense and ability to make product decisions independently
  • Experience writing product specs and creating wireframes
  • Demonstrated ability to balance speed and quality in software delivery
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • History of taking ownership of complex projects from conception to delivery
  • Comfort operating in a low-process, high-agency environment
  • Ability to create leverage through automation, abstractions, and tooling
  • Ambitious mindset with a drive to continuously improve skills
  • Openness to receiving frequent feedback and using it to grow

Nice to Have

  • Experience building software for Talent Acquisition or HR tech domains
  • Background in building systems that require complex business logic and user workflows
  • Experience with declarative architectures or rule-based systems
  • Familiarity with building scheduling or workflow automation systems
  • Prior work in early-stage or growth-stage startups with high ownership cultures

Technical Stack

  • Full-stack JavaScript/TypeScript
  • React
  • Node.js
  • SQL
  • Responsive web application development
  • Declarative filter architectures
  • Automated interview scheduling systems
  • Offer signing and document workflows
  • Design systems
  • SRE infrastructure

Team & Environment

  • Small engineering team, less than 50 engineers (implied by 'very small team' and doubling plans)
  • Flat, IC-driven engineering team with minimal hierarchy; senior engineers lead by doing, not managing
  • Reporting to VP of Engineering (Abhik, Co-Founder)
  • Ownership and agency over product and technical decisions
  • Minimal process and no daily stand-ups, sprint planning, or JIRA-heavy workflows
  • Engineers run their own projects
  • Natural collaboration and deliberate communication
  • Focus on building high-quality, innovative software
  • Trust in engineers to drive outcomes without managerial oversight
  • Investment in tools and abstractions for leverage
  • Humble, kind, and talented team members
  • Lifelong learning and continuous improvement
  • Optimistic about what engineers can achieve
  • Protects focus time and minimizes meetings

Benefits & Compensation

  • Agency and ownership typical of a seed-stage startup
  • Product-market fit and scale of a growth-stage startup
  • Tens of thousands of daily active users depending on your software
  • Opportunity to work on products beyond Talent Acquisition
  • Minimal meeting culture (<2 hours of meetings per week)
  • Focus time is sacred and protected
  • Supportive environment with design system and SRE team
  • High-impact work with direct customer visibility
  • Freedom to define how to solve problems
  • Opportunity to build reusable abstractions and tools
  • Work regular hours while delivering high-quality software
  • Diverse and inclusive team
  • Collaborative and kind team culture
  • Lifelong learning environment
  • Tens of millions in ARR, growing >100% year over year, with many years of runway (implies strong financial health and potential for equity value)

Work Mode

  • Role is focused on the Americas region
  • Implied flexibility within the Americas region; no mention of strict office requirements, but not explicitly remote/global

Ashby is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and respectful workplace.
