Lead the architecture, performance, and reliability of SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases across Azure, AWS, and on-premises environments. Work closely with engineering teams to automate operations, ensure high availability, and advance database scalability and security.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases, including architecture, deployment, and management across cloud and on-prem platforms.
- Conduct database design reviews, enforce schema governance, and optimize indexing and query performance for scalability.
- Implement and manage database security measures such as access controls, encryption, auditing, and compliance standards.
- Design and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions, including failover clusters and replication strategies, with defined RTO and RPO targets.
- Develop and validate backup and recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and operational resilience.
- Perform performance tuning, capacity planning, and workload optimization for critical production systems.
- Manage database patching, version upgrades, and cloud migration initiatives across hybrid environments.
- Automate routine DBA tasks such as provisioning, health monitoring, and failover testing using PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to resolve performance issues and improve data model efficiency.
- Define and implement monitoring and observability standards using tools like Datadog, Grafana, ELK, and Prometheus.
- Support incident response, root cause analysis, and postmortem improvements for database-related outages.
- Integrate database changes into CI/CD pipelines and manage schema deployment workflows.
- Document operational runbooks, best practices, and standards for database management.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in database performance optimization, including query plan analysis, indexing, and resolving locking and blocking issues.
- Proven track record in configuring high availability and disaster recovery solutions for SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
- Strong background in managing backup and restore strategies with regular validation and recovery testing.
- Demonstrated ability to secure databases through encryption, access controls, and hardening techniques.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms including Azure and AWS, covering both managed and self-hosted database services.
Nice to Have
- Experience using Infrastructure as Code and managing containerized databases in Kubernetes or Docker environments.
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or TeamCity for database deployment automation.
