Responsibilities
- Receive, process, and handle operational, quality assurance, and proficiency test samples that may contain biological threat agents.
- Prepare reagents and samples for analysis.
- Apply Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles.
- Decontaminate workspaces including biological safety cabinets, hoods, air boxes, equipment, and other items used in processing and analysis.
- Maintain chain-of-custody documentation.
- Interpret analytical results.
- Enter data using computerized or computer-linked systems.
- Perform routine calibration, cleaning, assembly, and maintenance of equipment.
- Collect, process, and analyze internal laboratory swabs for quality assurance, quality control, and contamination monitoring.
- Dispose of biohazardous waste properly.
- Restock and maintain adequate inventory of necessary supplies.
- Support biological weapons program logistics by conducting and documenting annual inventory of DHS-procured durable equipment and property.
- Conduct quality assurance, quality control, and acceptance testing of reagents according to standard operating procedures and the Laboratory Operations Quality Assurance Program Plan.
- Adhere to quality assurance and quality control requirements per the Public Health Laboratory quality management systems and the Quality Assurance Program Plan.
- Maintain records demonstrating compliance with training, retraining, competencies, and document reviews.
- Analyze routine external quality assurance samples following biological weapons standard operating procedures and QA program guidance.
- Archive, store, and ship samples properly.
- Follow written procedures and accepted practices in line with federal, state, and local regulations, safety, security, and dress code policies, including DHS safeguarding of Sensitive but Unclassified Information when visiting or working at government facilities.
- Prepare written and oral technical reports, answer questions, and make recommendations to the Lead Biological Scientist for inclusion in comprehensive reports.
- Perform work accurately and with confidence.
- Demonstrate competency in various testing methodologies such as multi-center studies, evaluate products and processes against unique environmental backgrounds, and meet deadlines.
- Be present for all workday hours and available 24/7/365 for emergency response; work rotating weekends and some holidays.
