Gannett's USA TODAY Sports seeks a versatile and energetic Soccer/Breaking News Writer to join a fast-moving team dedicated to becoming the dominant sports news source. You'll be a crucial part of a collaborative, remote team focused on speed, quality, and audience reach across the digital sports landscape.
What You'll Do
- Publish stories at the speed of news and quickly update them to serve reader needs.
- Maintain complete surveillance of the sports world, using tools like Google Trends to identify stories and opportunities.
- Build a rolodex of sources and contacts to strengthen news delivery.
- Master best practices for maximum reach on search and commit to getting content to the top of Google carousels.
- Contribute to on- and off-platform strategies, including podcasts, vodcasts, and vertical video.
- Communicate with precision to keep workflow rolling on a remote team.
- Track story performance and adjust constantly to meet performance goals.
- Contribute to any evolving USA TODAY Sports strategy, vertical, or initiative as needed.
What We're Looking For
- College degree in communications, journalism, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years' experience as a sports journalist with a focus on fast-paced digital content production and multimedia expertise.
- Strong reporting instincts and proven ability to break news.
- Ability to self-start, survey the sports landscape, and react quickly.
- A history of collaboration, innovation, and goal achievement.
- Proven ability to maximize readership by anticipating news, researching trends, and delivering in a variety of story formats.
- Excellent communication and time-management skills.
- Understanding of various news and information content management systems.
- Approachability, personal charisma, and a commitment to staff.
- Advanced knowledge of the global soccer scene and general knowledge of all sports.
- Experience using Google Trends to identify and prioritize stories.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Strong online communication skills.
Work Mode
This is a fully remote position. Candidates must be located within the United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
