AstraZeneca is hiring a Senior Scientist

The Senior Scientist will join the Translational Immunology group in Gaithersburg, MD, within the Early Vaccines and Immune Therapies division. This position centers on designing and interpreting mechanistic and translational studies to evaluate vaccine-induced cellular immunity, supporting the progression of vaccine programs from preclinical to clinical development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform in vitro experiments to measure vaccine-specific cellular immune responses and apply findings to improve vaccine technologies for cancer and infectious diseases.
  • Create, refine, and implement novel assays to detect and quantify cellular targets and efficacy indicators linked to vaccine performance.
  • Keep up with advances in immunology, oncology, and vaccinology by reviewing scientific literature and emerging platforms, and share knowledge across the Early Vaccines and Immune Therapies teams.
  • Assess new technologies and assay formats for evaluating human immune function to promote innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Present findings in team and departmental meetings and represent the group at scientific conferences.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records and ensure all work adheres to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) standards, and applicable internal and external regulations.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Immunology or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of three years of post-doctoral or industry experience in relevant disciplines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in immunology through publications and applied research in infectious disease and tumor-immune interactions.
  • In-depth knowledge of tumor biology, immune oncology methods, and experimental model systems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with multi-color flow cytometry, including panel design, staining, compensation, and data analysis.
  • Proficient in functional cell-based assays to assess therapeutic mechanisms such as cytotoxicity, T/NK cell activation, and cytokine production.
  • Comprehensive experience with single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), CITE-seq, and ATAC-seq, including experimental design, library preparation, quality control, and data interpretation.
  • Proven track record in developing, validating, and troubleshooting assays, as well as evaluating novel therapeutic approaches.
  • Strong ability to collaborate across functions, communicate clearly, and work effectively in team environments with discovery, translational, and data science teams.

Compensation

Annual base salary between $112,304.00 and $168,456.00 USD. Eligible for equity-based long-term incentives (salaried roles), short-term bonus, retirement contributions (hourly roles), and commission (sales roles).

Work Arrangement

Hybrid work model in Gaithersburg, MD, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office, with flexibility allowed.
