Giga Energy is hiring a Senior PLC Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Create, test, and deploy PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal with S7-1500/1200 or Rockwell Studio 5000 with ControlLogix/CompactLogix, employing IEC 61131-3 languages like Structured Text and ladder logic for cooling systems and mechanical plant gear including CDUs, chillers, hydraulic skids, fan walls, DOAS, and pumps.
  • Design supervisory control logic for the Master Plant Controller, covering equipment staging, lead/lag operations, setpoint adjustments, failover mechanisms, and coordination across multiple plant skids.
  • Develop and manage SCADA/HMI interfaces using platforms such as Siemens WinCC, Rockwell FactoryTalk View, or Ignition, including operator screens, alarm systems, data trending, historical logging, and access management.
  • Implement safety-critical logic, interlocks, and alarm strategies for high-power and pressurized equipment, adhering to a safety-first engineering approach.
  • Integrate OEM-controlled devices like chillers and DOAS via protocols including Modbus TCP, BACnet, OPC UA, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET, defining and verifying register and object mappings.
  • Construct process simulations and digital twins using tools like Siemens PLCSIM Advanced with SIMIT, Rockwell Studio 5000 Emulate with Emulate3D, or custom scripted models to test logic and optimize control loops prior to field installation.
  • Oversee on-site commissioning, startup activities, and loop checks; diagnose and resolve issues in operational systems.
  • Apply software engineering best practices to controls work, such as version control, code reviews, creating modular function-block libraries, and maintaining clear naming and documentation standards.
  • Develop auxiliary software around the controls stack, including data pipelines, monitoring services, telemetry, edge and cloud integrations, internal tools, and automation linking plant data to broader systems.
  • Convert controls architecture and operational sequences into functional, well-organized, and maintainable code.
  • Work effectively in uncertain and unstructured settings, solving problems where established procedures are absent.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience programming industrial PLCs and SCADA/HMI systems in live production environments.
  • Extensive hands-on expertise with Siemens TIA Portal and S7-1500/1200 or Rockwell Studio 5000 and ControlLogix/CompactLogix, with proficiency in Structured Text beyond ladder logic.
  • Demonstrated experience in SCADA/HMI development using platforms like Siemens WinCC, Rockwell FactoryTalk View, or Ignition, including features such as alarming, historical data, and trending.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, and BACnet.
  • Background in programming controls for mechanical, process, or HVAC systems involving pumps, valves, chillers, heat exchangers, and air handling units.
  • Proven track record of commissioning systems on operational equipment with a rigorous, safety-oriented approach.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, capable of collaborating with controls engineers, mechanical engineers, and field technicians.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites for installation and commissioning tasks.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with liquid cooling systems, data center cooling, or thermal management for high-density computing.
  • Familiarity with process simulation and digital twin tools such as SIMIT, PLCSIM Advanced co-simulation, or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Hands-on experience with Ignition from Inductive Automation, including scripting in Python or Jython.
  • Knowledge of functional safety standards and systems like PROFIsafe, CIP Safety, GuardLogix, or SIL-rated logic.
  • Depth in industrial networking, covering VLANs, redundancy, edge devices, and secure OT network design.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and I/O schedules.
  • Strong software engineering skills in a modern language like Python, C#, C++, or Go, with experience in Git, testing, and clean code practices.
  • Experience building data pipelines from edge to cloud or developing plant telemetry and observability systems.
  • Background in bridging IT and OT, incorporating modern practices such as CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, or containerization into controls environments.
  • Experience establishing controls programs from the ground up in fast-moving, greenfield projects.
