SLR is hiring a Senior Ornithologist

Role Summary

A senior-level position is available for an experienced ornithologist to take a leading role in onshore renewable energy projects across Scotland. The successful candidate will manage ornithological assessments, coordinate field surveys, and deliver high-quality technical reporting, primarily from an office setting with regular client interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of ornithological projects, ensuring adherence to scientific standards and client requirements
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients, landowners, and regulatory stakeholders
  • Support the preparation of competitive tenders and proposals for ecological services
  • Oversee a range of bird survey methods, including vantage point monitoring, breeding bird assessments, and raptor studies
  • Conduct data analysis, interpret findings, and present results clearly in written and visual formats
  • Produce detailed, accurate reports that inform environmental decision-making
  • Collaborate with the wider UK ecology team to provide technical guidance and support on complex projects

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Ecology, Biological Sciences, or a related field; an MSc or equivalent experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in bird identification and field survey techniques specific to upland and moorland species
  • Familiarity with standard data collection protocols and strong attention to detail in recordkeeping
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for technical documentation and data handling
  • Proven ability to write, edit, and quality-check technical reports
  • Holding a full UK driving licence is required

Preferred Attributes

  • Membership in CIEEM or a comparable professional body
  • Understanding of how onshore renewables affect bird populations and habitats
  • Experience contributing to Environmental Impact Assessments or Habitats Regulations Appraisals
  • Background in managing multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously
  • Working knowledge of GIS software
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and applying health and safety principles in field or office settings

Work Environment and Flexibility

This is a hybrid role based in Glasgow or Newcastle, with flexibility in working hours and location. Core team hours are supported by agile working policies, allowing for personal and family needs to be accommodated. The position allows for a mix of remote and office-based work.
