Responsibilities
- Act as the internal expert for grid modeling research by testing and comparing commercial and open-source tools using public data, identifying performance differences, and presenting insights to leadership to guide funding decisions.
- Develop standardized benchmarking initiatives for grid modeling tools and data in collaboration with external partners, manage philanthropic funding, and ensure results are publicly available for global use.
- Oversee grants and contracts focused on improving solvers, tools, and modeling methods, including setting objectives, monitoring progress, managing budgets, and reporting outcomes internally and externally.
- Support key industry partners in transitioning planning workflows from proprietary systems to open-source platforms by identifying adoption barriers and feeding insights into future investment strategies.
- Test and replicate current industry analyses—typically reliant on confidential data or proprietary software—using only open tools and public data to expose limitations and guide improvements.
- Assess technical requirements for modeling new energy technologies, contribute findings to the broader modeling community, and help shape effective solutions.
- Collaborate with the Director of Research and Analytics to evaluate external proposals and ongoing projects from a practitioner's perspective, ensuring relevance and usability for real-world grid planning.
- Foster cross-team collaboration within the organization to align technical efforts and share expertise across related initiatives.
- Represent the program in industry discussions, technical working groups, and public forums to promote open-source modeling and expand the program’s influence.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of power system modeling trends, emerging grid technologies, and advancements in open-source software development.
