Astronomer is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of engineers delivering commercial value from Apache Airflow open-source software. You will foster a high-performing culture and ensure products meet rigorous standards of quality and efficiency while contributing to our next-generation data orchestration platform.
What You'll Do
- Lead our globally distributed Airflow Infrastructure team to deliver an exceptional Apache Airflow experience.
- Provide technical mentorship and support to foster the growth of skilled software engineers.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of engineering projects from concept to deployment and support.
- Collaborate with Tech Leads, Product Managers, and leadership to align projects with company objectives.
- Ensure projects stay on track with efficient resource allocation and met deadlines.
- Collaborate with support and customer-facing teams to integrate customer feedback into the product.
- Drive efforts to identify and address performance bottlenecks for high-throughput, low-latency systems.
- Work with the team to implement comprehensive logging, monitoring, and alerting strategies.
- Proactively identify and manage technical debt towards a sustainable long-term architecture.
What We're Looking For
- Deep prior experience in software engineering.
- Multiple years of experience in a people management role.
- Strong technical background in distributed systems, data engineering, cloud computing, Kubernetes, and Docker.
- Ability to identify and solve complex technical challenges, balancing immediate and long-term needs.
- Proven track record of setting clear expectations and delivering high-quality software on time.
- Demonstrated ability to develop detailed project plans and communicate potential risks.
- Ability to work cross-functionally to align technical solutions with business goals and user needs.
- Proven ability to drive operational excellence through monitoring and continuous improvement.
- Some flexibility in working hours to accommodate a distributed team.
Nice to Have
- 5+ years of experience managing or directing software engineering teams.
- Proven experience in managing distributed teams.
- Contributions to open-source projects or a notable presence in the tech community.
- Previous working knowledge or experience with Airflow.
- Working knowledge of tech stacks based on Python or Golang.
