Nicklaus Children's Hospital is hiring a Registered Nurse for our Hematology/Oncology unit. In this role, you will plan and deliver care using the nursing processes of assessment, implementation, and evaluation for our pediatric Hematology/Oncology patients. You will oversee the plan of care, apply evidence-based practice, and provide compassionate, family-centered support.
What You'll Do
- Complete patient admission histories and discharge planning per department and hospital policies.
- Plan, implement, and document the plan of care in collaboration with other disciplines.
- Follow physician’s orders, administer chemotherapy and medications, and adhere to the six rights of medication administration.
- Provide nursing care to immuno-compromised patients, including central line monitoring, IV site monitoring, and lab draws.
- Perform interventions such as electrolyte infusions, sepsis monitoring, and transfusions with blood products.
- Collaborate and round with a multi-disciplinary team and foster a Family Centered Care Environment.
- Utilize electronic innovations for efficient patient care and attend to patient call lights per safety policy.
- Verify patient roadmap, protocol, and orders for correctness and accuracy upon admission.
- Ensure safe analgesics/narcotics administration, monitoring, and reassessment per Pain Management Policy.
- Complete comprehensive nursing multi-system assessments, including head-to-toe, vitals, dressing changes, and patient hygiene.
- Ensure appropriate restraint orders, documentation, and monitoring as required by Sedation Policy.
- Ensure proper and safe wound care per Wound Care Policy.
- Access the electronic health record independently and complete accurate, timely documentation.
- Communicate with patients and families regarding the plan of care, additional resources, new diagnoses, and treatment plans.
- Promote an "error-free" environment by consistently providing high-quality, safe care and preventing adverse events.
- Provide effective handoff communication at shift changes and patient reassignments.
- Demonstrate proper indication and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Participate actively in the nursing governance council and unit-based activities.
- Meet or exceed unit standards, maintain timely documentation, and comply with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure proper disposal of chemotherapy products per Disposal Waste Policy.
What We're Looking For
- Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure within the State of Florida or a Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC), maintained active and in good standing.
- American Heart Association BLS CPR for Healthcare Provider certification, maintained active and in good standing.
- American Heart Association PALS certification, to be obtained and maintained active and in good standing within 1 year.
- CHEMO/APHO Aphon - Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course certification, to be obtained and maintained active and in good standing within 1 year.
Nice to Have
- BSN degree or current enrollment in a BSN program.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience as an RN in a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology setting.
- Proficiency in computers and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- National pediatric nursing certification such as CPHON, CPON, or BMTCN, preferably within 5 years of hire.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data to make judgments regarding patient care.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to positively influence, hold self and others accountable, and work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice and analytical thinking.
- Ability to float to various nursing units while maintaining clinical excellence.
- Ability to provide coverage for on-call assignments per policy.
