Wikimedia Foundation is hiring a Principal, Global Event Security and Risk Management

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with volunteer organizers worldwide to understand local challenges and co-develop physical security best practices for movement activities.
  • Enhance the organization’s enterprise risk management framework through policy creation and execution.
  • Lead comprehensive risk and gap analyses to identify, document, and monitor high-priority organizational risks, consulting experts across technology, legal, operations, brand, and strategy.
  • Strengthen capabilities to detect, assess, and respond to evolving physical security threats affecting staff, communities, and partner groups.
  • Conduct risk evaluations for Foundation-supported community events, integrating input from multiple departments and sharing outcomes with stakeholders and organizers.
  • Design and coordinate emergency response strategies for physical threats, engaging internal teams, law enforcement, or external consultants as needed, and oversee approved plan implementation.
  • Serve on-call to evaluate security alerts, ensure proper escalation, lead emergency response teams during crises, assign on-site coordinators, and provide risk expertise.
  • Stay informed on global geopolitical developments and advancements in physical security methodologies.
  • Provide regular updates to senior legal and executive leadership, offering insights on effective practices, resource allocation, and system improvements.
  • Deliver crisis response support to internal teams engaged with high-risk communities.

Requirements

  • Extensive professional background in corporate and physical security across diverse geographic and political environments, with particular value placed on experience in the global south.
  • Proven track record in risk management, especially in leadership roles overseeing risk strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, communicating, and implementing emergency response protocols.
  • Strong analytical and networking abilities to interpret geopolitical trends and assess their impact on the organization and its stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of distilling complex information for executives, drafting detailed response plans, and conveying messages with empathy and clarity.
  • Ability to remain composed and decisive in uncertain or high-pressure situations involving potential physical danger.
  • Experience facilitating threat modeling and contingency planning sessions with experts and leadership.
  • Interpersonal skills to lead, inspire, and coordinate cross-functional teams and working groups under intense conditions.
  • Resilience when handling sensitive or distressing content, with a commitment to self-care during periods of high stress.
  • Experience using digital security tools to ensure secure communications during in-person events.
  • Adaptability in digital environments, with the capacity to learn new technologies and remain open to unfamiliar platforms.
  • Flexibility to work non-standard hours—including nights, weekends, and holidays—to respond to emergencies and engage with global stakeholders across time zones from UTC-8 to UTC+1.
  • Full proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice to Have

  • Ability to communicate in additional languages, particularly Arabic, French, or Spanish, is advantageous.

This position may involve exposure to disturbing images, media, or direct interaction with individuals in crisis situations.

Note

Currently, this role does not manage staff, but may supervise support personnel in the future.

Willingness to undertake moderate international travel

The role requires approximately four to six international trips annually to engage with volunteers, affiliate organizations, and potential partner institutions.
