About the Role

Florida Power & Light Company / NextEra Energy is hiring a Principal Engineer (Principal Metering Engineer) to provide comprehensive technical leadership for revenue metering systems across renewable energy project lifecycles. You will ensure systems meet all technical, contractual, and commercial requirements from development through construction.

What You'll Do

  • Provide end-to-end technical leadership and oversight of revenue metering systems for renewable energy development, design, and construction.
  • Interpret and organize metering requirements from customers, commercial operations, and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to prepare technical metering documentation and integrate specifications into engineering designs.
  • Program advanced metering systems and configure meter settings and templates.
  • Troubleshoot complex metering and substation metering issues.
  • Track and report on project contractual execution and design progress.
  • Deliver company standards, policies, and organizational support.
  • Prepare communications and presentations and provide support at meetings.
  • Formulate research and develop improvement measures.
  • Work with other departments to establish customer requirements.
  • Manage multiple stakeholders and oversee third-party engineering service providers.
  • Supervise external Metering Engineers of Record and oversee project management activities.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning and guiding extensive engineering programs.
  • Manage one or more programs of complex diversity and critical importance to company objectives.
  • Act as a subject matter expert.
  • Ability to work extended hours.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 3+ years in relevant P&C/Substation/Metering Engineering experience and Project Management.
  • A minimum of 3–5 years in metering programming.
  • Ability to read protection and control drawings.
  • Understanding of instrument transformers (CTs, PTs, CVTs).
  • Familiarity with various metering technologies, especially Schneider Electric ION-8650 meters.
  • Knowledge of meter-to-meter schemes, iron and copper loss compensation for transformers, generator tie line loss compensation, sharing losses, and meter programming or metering template creation.
  • 7+ years of total professional experience.

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering Management.
  • PMP Certification.
  • 5+ years P&C/Subs/Metering Engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of project management experience.
  • Prior work experience with an Independent System Operator (ISO) (e.g., SPP, MISO, CAISO).
  • Experience reviewing Large Generator Interconnection Agreements (LGIAs) and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
  • Experience with retail service provider agreements.
  • Experience with substation design.
  • Experience with metering standards.
  • Experience with metering auxiliary loads.
  • Experience with bench testing meters.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as modbus, DNP3, MV90.
  • Experience with SE ION-8650 meters.
  • Experience with Schneider’s ION Setup & PME Software Suites.
  • Experience with SEL-735 meters.
  • Experience with SEL’s AcSELerator Software.
  • Experience with Orion LX interface (Novatech NCD3).
  • Knowledge of IEEE-519 Harmonic Standard.
  • Ability to quickly learn, adapt, and apply best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, business acumen, management, and technical writing skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PPT, Word, Vizio, OneNote).
  • Familiar with Python.
  • Proficient in utilizing A.I. agents and A.I. prompting tools.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Metering Hardware: Schneider Electric ION-8650 meters, SEL-735 meters, Orion LX interface (Novatech NCD3)
  • Software: Schneider’s ION Setup & PME Software Suites, SEL’s AcSELerator Software, Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PPT, Word, Vizio, OneNote)
  • Languages/Protocols: Python, modbus, DNP3, MV90

Team & Environment

You will work closely with cross-functional internal stakeholders including various engineering disciplines, development, business management, project management, and transmission services. The role also requires coordination with external utilities, ISOs/RTOs, metering vendors, and EPC partners.
