About the Role

UMass Memorial Health is hiring a PCA II to join our Perioperative Services team. In this role, you will provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, supporting patient needs, comfort, and the efficiency of our surgical areas. You will be expected to take assignments across all Perioperative services, including the OR, SACU, and PACU, as part of our commitment to exceptional patient care.

What You'll Do

  • Provide a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities.
  • Assist with room preparation and turnover to maintain patient flow.
  • Transport patients, equipment, supplies, specimens, or blood.
  • Maintain peripheral corridors per fire and safety codes.
  • Tag broken equipment and transport it to repair areas.
  • Keep the supervising Registered Nurse informed of your location and activities.
  • Respond promptly to pages and phone calls.
  • Retrieve beds and stretchers from all hospital areas.
  • Provide coverage for the secretary at the desk as needed.
  • Report observations to the Registered Nurse in each area.
  • Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the preparation of Operating Rooms and other perioperative areas.
  • Understand sterile techniques and open sterile packages as directed by an RN.
  • Assist with operative surgical skin preps and/or patient positioning.
  • Pick equipment and supplies for patient procedures as assigned.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing compressed gas cylinders.
  • Assist with patient admission and discharge.
  • Help patients with undressing/dressing and care of their belongings.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse with vital signs and general assessment.
  • Perform patient testing like EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, and pregnancy tests.
  • Perform pre-operative skin preparation, including hair clipping and skin washing.
  • Provide skilled patient care as trained and assigned.
  • Assist with patient nutrition, ambulation, and activities of daily living.

What We're Looking For

  • Equivalent to a high school education.
  • PCA or EMT certification.
  • Knowledge of basic nursing procedures.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • One year of nursing procedure experience.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies related to perioperative patient care.
  • Ability to take direction, set priorities, and organize work assignments.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and speak English.
  • Must be able to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.

Nice to Have

  • Prior OR experience.

Team & Environment

You will work under the direction of a Registered Nurse in Perioperative Services and serve as an integral member of the patient care team.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Compensation: $21.60 - $33.89 per hour.

This is an onsite position.
