About the Role

The University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) is looking for a Payroll and HR Specialist. Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, you will play a key role in supporting our community by managing critical payroll functions and providing essential HR support. You will be the primary resource for employees on payroll, benefits, and policy matters.

What You'll Do

  • Perform a range of payroll, HRIS, and human resources administrative support activities.
  • Act as the first point of contact for payroll, benefits, and general HR inquiries.
  • Manage payroll transactions for non-appointed monthly and appointed and non-appointed bi-weekly paid employees.
  • Act as an HR and payroll resource for employees, providing advice, investigating, and resolving problems.
  • Schedule and conduct orientation sessions for all appointed staff.
  • Provide advice on complex payroll and salary administration issues.
  • Interpret related human resources policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Oversee the administration of human resource/payroll documentation and data integrity.
  • Provide timely and accurate HRIS reports to the Director, HR, the CAO, and the Finance team.
  • Participate in HRIS projects related to administrative processes and HR Analytics.
  • Drive process improvements to enhance efficiencies within payroll, pension, and benefits administration.

What We're Looking For

  • A university degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of payroll processing and human resources administration experience.
  • Experience maintaining a human resource information system (HRIS).
  • Experience with time management systems.
  • General knowledge of human resources practices and legislation, specializing in payroll and/or benefits.
  • Experience dealing effectively with a diverse group of clients in sensitive situations.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Superior data entry skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure of strict deadlines and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Strong analytical and numerical aptitude.
  • Initiative, sound judgment, tact, discretion, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to perform well independently and as a member of a team, and adapt to a changing environment.
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of policies and legislation, and learn new systems.

Nice to Have

  • Enrollment in courses leading to a Certified HR Professional or Payroll Compliance Practitioner Program certification.
  • Experience preferably in a University setting.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.

Team & Environment

You will report to the Director, Human Resources and operate under the day-to-day supervision of the HR & Payroll Advisor. You will work closely with the OISE HR team, maintaining a high level of confidentiality.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Hiring Zone: $73,205 - $93,705
  • Broadband Salary Range: $73,205 - $114,201
