Penn State is hiring a Part-Time Conservation GIS Intern

The Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center (AEC) is hiring a Part-Time Conservation GIS Intern for a summer position based at the University Park Campus. The AEC integrates education, research, and outreach to solve challenges at the intersection of agriculture and the environment. You’ll collaborate within a cohort of student interns to build tools and datasets that support conservation and watershed restoration in the Lower Susquehanna region.

What You'll Do

• Assist in developing GIS-based datasets, tools, and maps for AEC projects and programs.
• Collaborate with Penn State research labs providing GIS-based decision support tools for agricultural conservation.
• Work with the Center for Agricultural Conservation Assistance Training (CACAT) to conduct watershed assessments for county conservation districts.
• Participate in other AEC activities, including volunteer events, workshops, field assessments, water quality monitoring, and site visits.

What We're Looking For

• Relevant coursework, concentration, or major in Geography or GIS sciences.
• Interest in water resources, natural resources, and environmental or agricultural sciences.
• Status as an undergraduate upper-class student or early-stage graduate student (rising third year or above).
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Excel, including geospatial analysis and data visualization.
• Ability to work from home.
• Willingness to work outside in variable weather and site conditions.
• Ability to conduct occasional travel.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Team & Environment

You will join a cohort of student summer interns at the AEC and the related Center for Agricultural Conservation Assistance Training (CACAT). You'll assist the AEC Director, GIS Specialist, GIS Technician, and other staff.

This is a hybrid position based at the University Park Campus in Pennsylvania.
