About the Role

Work as a Geospatial Data Analyst on the MarineCadastre.gov initiative, supporting NOAA's Office for Coastal Management. This Charleston-based position plays a key role in managing, processing, and delivering geospatial data to federal systems and public users. You'll collaborate with data scientists, policy experts, and IT professionals to ensure data integrity, performance, and accessibility across national platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to evaluate, process, and publish geospatial datasets for public use
  • Engage with federal data stewards and technical specialists to assess data suitability and integration pathways
  • Apply GIS and data science methods to transform complex scientific information into accessible formats
  • Design and maintain data pipelines using scripting and automation tools within federal cyberinfrastructure
  • Manage diverse data structures and implement quality assurance across hundreds of datasets, from small files to multi-terabyte collections
  • Support performance and functionality of map services in federal applications including MarineCadastre.gov and OceanReports
  • Coordinate with IT, database administrators, and developers to deploy data on on-premise and Azure-hosted environments
  • Translate user requirements into technical specifications for development teams

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in geography, earth sciences, GIS, or a related field is required. Candidates must have at least five years of hands-on experience with both ESRI and open-source GIS platforms. Strong proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, map service publishing, and performance optimization is essential. Experience implementing data quality controls, metadata standards, and documentation workflows is expected. You must be able to work effectively in a distributed team environment and pass a National Agency Check (NACI), including fingerprinting, with ongoing compliance.

Preferred Background

  • Marine or coastal science experience
  • Working knowledge of ESRI Portal, ArcGIS Server/Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online
  • Experience tuning and publishing high-performance map services
  • Familiarity with SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases
  • Proficiency in Python, including Pandas and Plotly libraries
  • Experience with vector tile technologies such as MapBox or AzureMaps
  • Background in creating interactive story maps or similar tools
  • Cloud-based geospatial data processing, particularly in Azure environments

Technology Environment

The role leverages a mix of ESRI platforms—including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGISServer—alongside open-source tools, cloud infrastructure (Azure), and scripting languages like Python. Data management spans SQL Server and PostgreSQL, with visualization supported by Pandas, Plotly, and vector tile frameworks.
