Role Overview
We are looking for skilled interpreters to support face-to-face communication in government settings across Snohomish County, Washington. As an independent contractor, you will enable clear and accurate dialogue between English speakers and individuals with limited English proficiency, primarily through on-site interpretation. Occasional remote assignments may also be available via phone or video platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver accurate consecutive or simultaneous interpretation during in-person meetings between officials and non-English speakers
- Preserve the original meaning, tone, and intent of conversations while using clear and respectful language
- Maintain professional enunciation and appropriate register in both languages
- Guide interactions smoothly by following the lead speaker and requesting clarification when necessary
- Remain neutral and avoid personal conversations with the limited English proficient individual
- Adhere strictly to ethical guidelines, including confidentiality and impartiality
- Refrain from engaging in disputes or expressing personal opinions to clients or participants
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of on-site interpreting experience using consecutive or simultaneous methods
- Two verifiable professional references specific to interpreting work
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Current resident of Washington State
- Fluent in English and native or near-native proficiency in a second language
- Holding one of the following: Washington DSHS Language Testing and Certification, ATA accreditation, or formal training from an accredited academic institution
- Valid Washington State Patrol background check, or ability to obtain equivalent or higher clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience interpreting for Washington State agencies such as the Department of Labor & Industries, State Patrol, Department of Agriculture, or Department of Commerce
