What You'll Do
Facilitate accurate verbal communication between government representatives and individuals who are not fluent in English, primarily through in-person assignments in Snohomish County. Interpret spoken dialogue using consecutive or simultaneous methods, ensuring meaning, tone, and intent are preserved across languages.
Deliver services with professionalism, clarity, and cultural sensitivity. Maintain neutral presence during interactions, avoiding personal involvement or side conversations. Step in only when necessary to request clarification, ensuring the exchange remains smooth and accurate.
Support communication via multiple formats, including face-to-face meetings, over-the-phone interpretation, and video remote sessions. Adhere strictly to ethical standards, confidentiality protocols, and professional conduct at all times.
Requirements
- Minimum of one year of documented experience in on-site consecutive or simultaneous interpreting
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Residency in the state of Washington
- Fluency in English and native or near-native proficiency in a second language
- Two professional references confirming interpreting experience
- One of the following credentials: Washington DSHS Language Testing and Certification (LTC), American Translators Association (ATA) accreditation, or certification from an accredited higher education program
- Active Washington State Patrol background check or ability to provide a clearance that meets or exceeds WSP standards
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with Washington state agencies such as the Department of Labor & Industries, State Patrol, Department of Agriculture, or Department of Commerce is strongly preferred. Familiarity with government procedures and public service environments will support success in this role.
Work Mode
This is an on-site position based in Snohomish County, Washington, with potential for remote interpretation assignments as needed. Interpreters will be engaged as independent contractors.
