This role involves evaluating client IT environments, creating migration strategies, and managing the movement of applications, data, and infrastructure to cloud or on-premises destinations. The consultant ensures secure, efficient transitions by coordinating technical teams, minimizing downtime, and aligning solutions with business goals through strong communication and project management.
Responsibilities
- Help design comprehensive migration strategies aligned with business and technical needs.
- Evaluate existing IT environments to determine migration scope and requirements.
- Support decisions on hosting models including public, private, hybrid, or multi-cloud environments and select appropriate cloud providers.
- Define cost, security, and compliance standards for cloud adoption initiatives.
- Create detailed plans for migrating or transforming systems and applications.
- Aggregate data from multiple sources, identify gaps, and build complete inventory records.
- Develop strategies for rehosting, re-platforming, re-architecting, or replacing legacy systems.
- Identify system dependencies and potential risks in cloud, on-premises, or hybrid migrations.
- Recommend compute, storage, networking, and security configurations to enhance performance.
- Lead migration execution to reduce downtime and operational impact.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, DevOps, security, and networking teams to define configuration needs.
- Oversee data transfers, application refactoring, and integration with cloud-native services.
- Offer occasional post-implementation support and troubleshooting assistance.
- Suggest optimizations to improve cost-efficiency and performance after migration.
- Engage with business leaders, developers, and IT staff to align migration objectives.
- Assist in creating training materials for client teams on migration best practices.
- Report migration progress, risks, and resolutions to stakeholders.
- Produce professional technical documentation using strong writing skills.
- Create logical and physical architecture diagrams using tools like LucidChart or Visio.
- Lead client-facing discussions and whiteboarding sessions to guide solution design.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional or military experience.
- Minimum of three years of experience in the IT industry.
- At least one year of hands-on migration experience.
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Solid understanding of IaaS and PaaS cloud services.
- Knowledge of core infrastructure components: compute, storage, and networking.
- Familiarity with virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere and MS Hyper-V.
- Experience with cloud and on-premises migration tools and methodologies.
- Proven project management and client communication skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to initiate tasks and work independently.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
- Skilled in creating accurate diagrams and documentation of technical environments.
- High attention to detail in planning and execution.
- Experience working collaboratively in team settings.
Nice to Have
- Proficient in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP) with relevant certifications.
- Three or more years of migration-focused experience.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, or QuickSight.
- Familiarity with workflow management systems like Jira or Azure DevOps.
- Project management experience with certifications such as PMP or Agile.
- Strong analytical skills to design and explain complex infrastructure solutions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Technical certifications are highly preferred.
- Knowledge of security standards including PCI, SOC2, NIST, HITRUST, FedRAMP, and others.
- Experience with access management, cloud security posture, data loss prevention, and encryption.
- Track record of optimizing cloud resources for performance and cost efficiency.
- Familiarity with monitoring and alerting systems.
- Willingness to learn new tools and adapt quickly to evolving requirements.
- Team-oriented mindset with flexibility to support team needs beyond core duties.
