About the Role
The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist ensures accurate translation of medical services into billing codes, supports timely reimbursement, and maintains compliance with regulatory standards through precise documentation and claims management.
Responsibilities
- Assign accurate medical codes to patient records using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS standards
- Process insurance claims and ensure timely submission to payers
- Resolve claim denials and follow up on outstanding balances
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA and other healthcare privacy regulations
- Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility
- Collaborate with clinical staff to clarify documentation for coding accuracy
- Update coding databases and stay current with regulatory changes
- Audit medical records for coding completeness and accuracy
- Support revenue cycle management by minimizing billing errors
- Communicate with insurance companies to resolve payment discrepancies
- Maintain detailed records of billing activities and coding decisions
- Assist in preparing financial and compliance reports
- Ensure proper documentation supports billed services
- Follow internal procedures for handling patient billing inquiries
- Participate in training for new coding guidelines or software updates
- Use electronic health record and billing systems efficiently
- Monitor accounts receivable and aging reports
- Identify and report potential coding or billing compliance risks
- Support internal and external audits with accurate documentation
- Contribute to process improvements in billing workflows
