Washington University in St. Louis is hiring a Medical Assistant III for Surgical Oncology. This role acts as a primary clinical resource and may lead the work of other Medical Assistants within a large, multi-physician practice. You will be responsible for preparing exam rooms, directing patient flow, and ensuring the clinical office runs smoothly.
What You'll Do
- Interact directly with patients to obtain vital signs, conduct EKGs, complete phlebotomy, and verify medications.
- Prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms.
- Assist with examinations, procedures, and lab tests.
- May assist with renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders.
- May administer medications, including vaccines and injections, under physician or nurse practitioner order.
- May schedule and assign work to other Medical Assistants, assisting in orientation and training.
- Direct patient flow, assist with special procedures and treatments, and complete requisitions.
- Route phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
- Assist with care coordination, including calling patients with results, scheduling appointments and surgeries, and monitoring patient contacts.
- Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
- Answer basic patient and family questions regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures.
- May complete requisitions and orders per Washington University guidelines.
- Monitor supply inventory to ensure adequate supplies and equipment are available and compliant.
- Clean and stock exam rooms and sterilize instruments.
- Maintain required HIPAA compliance and participate in in-services and training programs.
- Comply with OSHA, state, and federal regulations.
- Participate in quality improvement activities.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
- Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (online-only certifications not accepted).
- Medical Assistant credential from an in-person proctored exam from NHA, AAMA, or AMT (or approved alternative).
- Three years of related work experience (e.g., military medic, EMT, Nurse’s Aide, physical therapy/nurse technician, certified athletic trainer).
- Ability to obtain Medical Assistant certification/registration within six months of hire.
Nice to Have
- Three years of Medical Assistant experience.
- One year of supervisory experience.
- Skills in Anatomy, Communication, Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Interactive Communication, Interpersonal Relationships, Medical Terminology, Physiology, and Telephone Communications.
Team & Environment
May lead Medical Assistants I and II in a large multi-physician clinical practice.
