AECOM was looking for a Mechanical Engineering Lead, Data Centers - Remote (U.S.)

Lead the mechanical design and execution of large-scale data center projects as the primary engineering contact for clients and internal teams. This role centers on delivering reliable, efficient, and code-compliant mechanical systems for hyperscale environments, with responsibility spanning from concept through construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main liaison for client communication, addressing technical inquiries and ensuring alignment with project goals
  • Lead mechanical engineering teams, coordinating HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection disciplines to meet project timelines and budgets
  • Develop detailed equipment specifications for pumps, fans, air handling units, and related systems
  • Prepare technical reports summarizing system performance, design decisions, and compliance findings
  • Ensure mechanical designs align with overall project scope and schedule, integrating with electrical and structural components
  • Stay current with evolving codes and industry standards for mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems in mission-critical facilities
  • Analyze system performance data to identify optimization opportunities and recommend upgrades
  • Support construction teams by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field issues
  • Participate in site visits, design reviews, and commissioning activities as required
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineers to integrate chiller systems and other mechanical components with broader data center infrastructure
  • Assess energy consumption patterns and propose solutions to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and equipment for improved performance and long-term sustainability

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Senior Mechanical Engineer on hyperscale data center projects
  • Background in designing and managing mechanical systems for high-density computing environments
  • Strong technical foundation in HVAC, piping, and fire suppression system design
  • Familiarity with construction-phase engineering support and field coordination

Work Environment

This position offers remote work flexibility within the U.S., with the requirement to work from an AECOM office location when needed. Periodic travel is scheduled in advance for client meetings, milestone reviews, and on-site collaboration. The role connects you with global teams working on fast-moving, technically complex data center developments.
