Hybrid Full-time

Thomson Reuters is hiring a Legal Counsel

About the Role

Thomson Reuters is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our team in a strategic specialist role focused on maintaining and innovating the company's customer contracting framework. You will shape how the legal team negotiates and drafts by providing state-of-the-art, clear, practical, and commercially aligned guidance through playbooks, templates, and know-how materials.

What You'll Do

  • Stay current with modern cloud and SaaS developments to draft and update template contracts, clauses, and supporting guidance using industry best practices.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the customer contract playbook, including fallback positions and rationale for use in negotiations.
  • Partner with legal team members to remove friction, bring speed, create leverage, and propose clear, scalable improvements to contracting.
  • Monitor legal developments and market trends, particularly in SaaS and AI, and translate them into actionable guidance for the legal team.
  • Support knowledge-sharing initiatives and lead the creation and delivery of resources to inspire and upskill legal colleagues.
  • Act as an owner on contracting positions to drive consistency and quality in negotiations across the legal team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with legal, sales, commercial policy, and risk & compliance teams to ensure playbook positions reflect broader business objectives.

What We're Looking For

  • A JD (or equivalent experience) with substantial in-house or law firm experience negotiating complex SaaS and technology contracts.
  • Deep understanding of key contracting issues in SaaS, including data, privacy, liability, IP, AI use, and service levels.
  • Strong drafting skills and a passion for innovating contracts using clear, concise, and user-friendly legal language.
  • Practical and commercial mindset, with the ability to translate legal risk into business-aligned guidance.
  • Genuine desire to move into a strategic knowledge support role.
  • A self-starter with a genuine interest in legal innovation, transformation, know-how, process improvement, consistency, and enabling scalable legal support.
  • Collaborative, curious and communicative, with experience working in or alongside policy, legal operations, or knowledge management teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience developing or managing a legal playbook or knowledge hub is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with generative AI use cases in legal contracting or legal tech tools is highly desired.

Team & Environment

This role sits within the Knowledge & Policy Team, part of the GCO Customers & Commercial Practice Group.
