Job Summary The UBC Investigations Office ("IO") oversees formal complaint processes across multiple institutional policies. The Investigator primarily handles complaints under the Respectful Environment Statement, with potential investigations across other policies. Investigations must adhere to relevant policies, laws, procedural fairness, and trauma-informed principles. Organizational Status Reporting to the Associate Director, Investigations, the role involves collaborative engagement with various campus stakeholders and external entities. The position operates within a complex unionized environment involving multiple staff and faculty unions. Work Performed • Conducts assigned investigations through: - Identifying core investigative issues - Ensuring accessible, fair processes - Gathering evidence via trauma-informed interviews - Assessing credibility and establishing factual findings - Applying relevant policies and legal frameworks - Preparing comprehensive written investigation reports • Communicates with involved parties, including complainants, respondents, representatives, and administrative units • Demonstrates diplomatic communication during investigation-related inquiries • Participates in internal investigation report review processes • Collaborates on IO process development and administrative support • Engages professionally in campus-wide policy forums • Explores alternative resolution approaches during investigations Consequence of Error/Judgement The investigator role carries significant responsibility. Investigations involve complex, potentially serious matters with substantial disciplinary implications. Exceptional judgment and sensitivity are crucial to maintaining institutional investigation process credibility. Improper investigations risk individual trauma and potential legal, reputational, and financial consequences. Supervision Works independently under Associate Director's direction. No direct supervisory responsibilities. Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline.
