Responsibilities
- Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination through fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy
- Perform routine and special staining procedures following established protocols
- Assist with immunohistochemistry staining and related procedures as applicable
- Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and tracking throughout all processing stages
- Maintain quality and integrity of tissue samples to support accurate diagnosis
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology equipment such as microtomes, processors, and stainers
- Adhere to laboratory policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, including infection control practices
- Maintain documentation, logs, and records in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards such as CAP, CLIA, and TJC
- Perform quality control and participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities
- Manage workflow to meet turnaround time expectations and prioritize urgent specimens
- Assist with inventory management, including ordering and stocking of supplies and reagents
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations
- Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Participate in continuing education and competency assessments
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director or Manager
