Virtua Health, a partner devoted to building a healthier community, is hiring a HIM Coder for a per diem, hybrid role. You will code and abstract hospital medical records for diagnostic and procedural coding, ensuring accuracy through federal and state guidelines. You'll collaborate closely with medical staff and clinical documentation improvement (CDI) teams to clarify documentation.
What You'll Do
- Accurately review each record and utilize ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, and an encoder to code all significant diagnoses and procedures according to AHA, AHIMA, UHDDS, and hospital guidelines.
- Sequence principal (or first-listed) diagnosis and principal procedures according to documentation and UHDDS definitions.
- Utilize ongoing knowledge of DRGs to validate DRG assignments.
- Accurately utilize federal and state regulations to assure uniformity of abstract data elements.
- Verify and/or abstract required data into computer system according to procedure.
- Utilize equipment and processes appropriately to ensure efficient coding and abstracting.
- Participate in maintaining DNB and accounts receivable goal.
- Maintain department level competencies.
- Participate in performance improvement activities.
What We're Looking For
- Minimum of two years inpatient records coding experience or equivalent.
- Ability to perform functions in a Microsoft Windows environment.
- Ability to be detail-oriented and perform tasks at a high level of accuracy.
- Ability to make sound decisions.
- Demonstrated good communication and teamwork skills.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology/Medical terminology.
- AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required for all employees hired after 10/1/2025.
Nice to Have
- Previous experience with an electronic legal health record system.
- Coding education or equivalent in years of experience.
