The Hands-on Infrastructure Engineering Team Lead is a key role within GE HealthCare's Engineering organization, responsible for technical ownership of on-prem infrastructure supporting Molecular Imaging scanner product development. This position blends deep technical expertise with leadership, overseeing infrastructure operations, projects, and continuous improvement across Linux and Windows environments while guiding a small engineering infrastructure team.
What You'll Do
- Own on-prem engineering infrastructure (Linux-first): install, configure, operate, troubleshoot, and continuously improve servers (physical/virtual) across Linux and Windows (Windows primarily clients and some servers)
- Manage virtualization platforms (VMware/ESXi and/or KVM), ensuring stability, performance, scalability, and lifecycle upgrades
- Manage enterprise storage and backup/restore services to ensure availability, recoverability, performance, and capacity planning (including restore readiness)
- Own monitoring/observability for infrastructure and services (alerting, dashboards, proactive detection) and drive measurable improvements in reliability, performance, and quality
- Support engineering infrastructure networking needs, including basic network operations and troubleshooting (e.g., VLANs, DNS/DHCP), and coordination with network teams
- Install, configure, and support engineering tools and shared services (e.g., CI/build infrastructure, source control services, containers, remote access)
- Support engineering development workflows and environments; improve throughput, stability, and user experience
- Lead resolution of complex infrastructure incidents and escalations; perform root-cause analysis; drive corrective and preventive actions (post-incident reviews, runbooks, continuous improvement)
- Drive modernization, standardization, and automation (scripting, templates, configuration approaches, documentation) to reduce manual effort and improve service reliability
- Initiate and lead infrastructure projects, coordinating stakeholders to deliver improvements in engineering productivity, performance, and reliability
- Coordinate and perform occasional physical data center activities as needed (racking/cabling, power checks, basic hardware troubleshooting, vendor follow-up)
- Implement baseline hardening and patch/lifecycle practices in collaboration with IT/Security to deliver secure and compliant infrastructure services
- Lead the team’s day-to-day execution: intake/triage, prioritization across projects/issues/incidents, task assignment, delivery tracking, and stakeholder updates
- Mentor and develop team members through onboarding, coaching, feedback, and knowledge sharing; establish operational standards and best practices
- Own planning activities: roadmap, capacity planning, lifecycle management, upgrades, and risk mitigation
- Build and manage infrastructure and software licensing budgets for the infrastructure team and engineering teams; lead procurement, renewals, and vendor engagement (requirements, quotes, purchasing), and drive cost optimization
- Collaborate with Engineering, IT, Security, and Procurement to deliver secure, compliant, and reliable infrastructure services
What We're Looking For
- B.Sc. in Computer Science / Software Engineering / Computer Engineering (or similar) from an accredited institution (preferred); Practical Engineer (הנדסאי) and/or graduates of military technology units (IDF) and/or relevant professional courses/certifications with proven hands-on experience in enterprise infrastructure (equivalent accepted)
- Strong, hands-on experience administering Linux in enterprise/on-prem environments
- Working experience with Windows administration (primarily clients and some servers)
- Hands-on experience operating production virtualization environments (VMware/ESXi and/or KVM)
- Experience with enterprise storage and backup/restore (SAN/NAS concepts, availability, performance, capacity planning, and restore readiness)
- Experience with monitoring/observability and using it to drive proactive reliability/performance improvements
- Scripting/automation skills (e.g., Bash/Python/PowerShell or similar) with a mindset of standardization and reducing manual work
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting across infrastructure and services (systematic diagnosis, log/metrics analysis, restoring service under pressure)
- Hands-on experience with basic network operations and troubleshooting (e.g., DNS/DHCP/connectivity, routing basics, VLANs), including coordination with network teams when needed
- Experience with shared file services (e.g., NFS/SMB) and identity/directory services (e.g., Active Directory/LDAP/NIS)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a service-oriented approach to supporting engineering users
- Proven experience leading a technical team or serving as a hands-on team lead with clear ownership (prioritization, task assignment, delivery tracking, stakeholder updates)
- Lead incident management practices, including major incident coordination, post-incident reviews, runbooks, and continuous improvement
- Ability to plan and execute infrastructure work across projects and operational needs (capacity, upgrades, lifecycle, risk mitigation)
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting R&D/engineering environments and toolchains (e.g., build/CI infrastructure, developer enablement tools, containers, remote access, monitoring)
- Experience driving modernization and automation at scale (standard images/templates, configuration approaches, monitoring/alerting maturity, documentation/runbooks)
- Experience leading infrastructure projects (requirements, design, rollout planning, stakeholder coordination)
- Budget ownership experience (forecasting, renewals, vendor management) and familiarity with procurement processes
- Familiarity with security and compliance practices for on-prem infrastructure (hardening, access controls, auditability) in collaboration with Security/IT
- Relevant certifications/training (Linux/VMware/Microsoft/Storage/Network/Cloud) are an advantage
