The Florida Department of Health, Brevard County is hiring an Environmental Specialist I to protect public health by ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This OPS (Temporary) role involves conducting field inspections and enforcing standards for septic systems and Aerobic Treatment Units.
What You'll Do
- Conduct inspections of septic systems and Aerobic Treatment Units at regulated facilities.
- Issue enforcement actions for non-compliant systems and write permits for compliant ones.
- Review applications and conduct site evaluations to determine septic system suitability.
- Operate a bucket auger to dig 6-foot holes and profile soil for color and texture.
- Use tools including a laser level, probe, measuring tape, and lid puller.
- Investigate sanitary nuisance complaints and participate in public education efforts.
- Enter all inspection data and completed work into tracking systems.
- Operate 4-wheel drive vehicles for travel across the county.
- Attend training sessions and seminars on environmental health regulations.
- Respond to emergencies by working before, during, or beyond normal hours.
What We're Looking For
- A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical/biological science.
- Proficiency with PCs, general office equipment, Microsoft programs, and other computer software.
- Ability to use a bucket auger to profile soils to a depth of 72" and operate field measuring devices.
- Ability to lift over 50 pounds and work in inclement weather, including temperatures exceeding 95 degrees.
- Valid Driver’s license and ability to travel 100+ miles per day to various locations in Brevard County.
- Authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
- Willingness to obtain certification for Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems within 6 months of hire.
- This position requires daily in-office or field work.
