Canva is looking for an Engineering Manager to shape the future of video performance. You will lead a specialized team of performance and systems engineers within the Video Group, ensuring our long-term innovation is matched by speed and reliability.
What You'll Do
- Hire, mentor, and support a specialized team of performance and systems engineers.
- Shape the long-term performance roadmap for the Video Group and prioritize high-impact initiatives.
- Partner closely with Video Engine, AI Research, Product, and Design teams to embed performance considerations early in development.
- Champion performance-aware engineering practices across the broader organization.
- Drive delivery of performance-related improvements and internal tooling.
- Define and track key performance indicators aligned with Canva’s global goals.
- Contribute to technical design reviews for scalability, efficiency, and maintainability.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams in fast-moving, product-focused environments.
- Strong end-to-end systems thinking across frontend, backend, and native engines, particularly in video or other performance-critical applications.
- Ability to translate high-level performance ambitions into clear, actionable engineering roadmaps.
- Ability to communicate complex technical topics to align technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Balance long-term architectural quality with pragmatic delivery, grounding work in user experience.
- Comfort using telemetry, experimentation, and A/B testing to evaluate technical improvements.
Nice to Have
- Experience working with cross-platform engines (C++, WebAssembly, native platforms).
- Familiarity with performance considerations in Generative AI and ML model deployment.
- Deep knowledge of mobile (iOS/Android) performance ecosystems and profiling tools.
- Experience in a high-growth environment where priorities evolve quickly.
