Illinois State University is hiring an Editorial Writer and Content Strategist

This role is central to maintaining strong editorial standards across all university communications, ensuring clarity, consistency, and professionalism in both print and digital content. As the Editorial Writer and Content Strategist, you will edit and refine messaging across websites, social media, newsletters, and publications, upholding a high bar for writing quality and brand alignment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and enhance the editorial quality of university-wide communications
  • Edit copy for the university’s primary social channels and news platform
  • Ensure projects meet deadlines and adhere to established style guidelines
  • Collaborate with departments and offices to support content development for print and digital use
  • Provide guidance on style and tone, explaining editorial decisions to stakeholders
  • Occasionally work evenings or weekends to cover time-sensitive events or stories

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field is required, along with at least two years of professional writing experience in media, public relations, or corporate communications. Familiarity with The Associated Press Stylebook and strong grammar skills are essential.

Preferred skills include experience with SEO, web analytics, and e-newsletter production. Proficiency in Microsoft Word is expected, and knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, photography, or videography is a plus. Candidates should be detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, and comfortable working collaboratively across departments.

Work Environment

This is an onsite position based in Normal, IL, with standard business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some flexibility is required to accommodate event coverage outside regular hours.
