The Oregon Department of Justice is hiring a DOJ Investigator 3 for its Trial Division in Salem. You will conduct investigations as part of a trial team defending the State of Oregon in state and federal courts. Your work will include locating witnesses and evidence, preparing reports, and assisting in civil litigation defense.
What You'll Do
- Identify, locate, and interview witnesses, taking and recording statements.
- Prepare investigative reports.
- Identify, locate, and interview persons/experts with technical or scientific knowledge.
- Serve subpoenas.
- Analyze and evaluate statements from parties and witnesses.
- Participate in depositions and prepare legally sufficient documents like subpoenas and affidavits.
- Identify, locate, and preserve physical and documentary evidence.
- Prepare evidence and other exhibits for use at trial.
- Take or obtain admissible photographs, film, or video tape of relevant scenes.
- Assist staff attorneys during case preparation and trial, with potential for trial testimony.
- Be available for night, weekend, and holiday assignments when required.
What We're Looking For
- Four years of recent (within the last ten years) full-time investigative experience including fact-finding, collecting evidence, examining records, locating and interviewing witnesses, and writing court-ready reports.
- College-level courses in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Law, Accounting, or Auditing may substitute on a year-for-year basis for up to one year of the required experience.
- A valid Oregon Driver’s License, maintained throughout employment.
- Ability to travel out of town, including evenings or weekends.

- Experience in conducting field investigations and surveillance.
- Experience using investigation tools, the internet, and computer software to prepare reports and exhibits.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated skill in critical thinking.
- Excellent communication skills and experience interviewing witnesses from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience working with confidential information and privileged communications.
- Experience in collecting, organizing, and analyzing large volumes of information from multiple sources.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize work.
- Experience testifying in a courtroom setting.
- Ability to apply de-escalation techniques when dealing with difficult individuals.
Team & Environment
You will work as part of a trial team led by an assigned Assistant Attorney General who assigns tasks to legal secretaries, paralegals, and investigators. You will report to the Chief Trial Counsel and Assistant Attorney Generals.
