Mutual of Omaha is looking for a Director of Software Engineering Practices to provide strategic leadership in elevating software quality, security, and delivery effectiveness. This multiplier role leads teams in building secure, reliable, and highly observable systems through automation and standards, embedding DevSecOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles into the Software Delivery Lifecycle.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage the I/S Department, including hiring, coaching, and mentoring managers and senior engineers, fostering cross-team collaboration, and building high-performing engineering organizations.
- Define engineering maturity baselines for DevSecOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices, rigorously tracking progress with quantitative and qualitative metrics.
- Partner with business leaders to define and execute the technology roadmap, ensuring solutions align with enterprise goals and standards.
- Champion modern software engineering practices and lead enterprise adoption of tools to improve productivity, code quality, and deployment efficiency.
- Lead R&D initiatives to evaluate emerging technologies, anticipate trends, and drive innovation in Insurance and IT.
- Oversee planning and execution of key software initiatives, including resource estimation, task allocation, performance monitoring, and ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery.
- Drive process improvements and resource optimization by collaborating with business partners, peers, and vendors.
What We're Looking For
- 8–10 years of progressive IT experience, including 3–5 years leading and developing professional software engineering teams.
- Experience in DevSecOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), driving secure, scalable, and highly available systems.
- Proven IT leader with a strong business partner focus, fostering cross-team collaboration and driving high-performing hybrid and remote teams.
- Experience managing budgets and resources effectively, with a track record of optimizing costs while maintaining performance standards.
- Strong project management expertise, including planning, scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and prioritization.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Superior analytical, conceptual, and decision-making abilities, with a proven capacity to solve complex problems.
- Ability to travel for strategic initiatives, leadership engagements, vendor meetings, and periodic conferences.

- Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

- Compensation: $155,000 - $220,000 plus annual bonus opportunity.
