Smartsheet is looking for a Director, Payroll to be the strategic and forward-thinking leader who owns, improves, and manages our global payroll processes. You will shape the payroll approach and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver accurate payroll for all employees, supporting our rapid growth and global expansion.
What You'll Do
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global payroll team.
- Set strategic goals and objectives for the payroll department aligned with company business strategy.
- Develop strong stakeholder relationships and ensure cross-functional collaboration.
- Oversee end-to-end processing of complex multi-state and international payrolls for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and international payroll laws and regulations.
- Proactively monitor and adapt to changes in global payroll laws and regulations.
- Prepare and analyze comprehensive payroll reports for management and stakeholders.
- Lead evaluation, selection, implementation, and optimization of payroll systems.
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, and IT to streamline processes and enhance employee experience.
- Drive special projects like system migrations, new country expansions, or M&A integrations.
- Act as primary point of contact for complex payroll-related inquiries.
- Resolve escalated payroll issues in a timely and professional manner.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive payroll experience.
- At least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
- Extensive hands-on experience with implementation and optimization of major global payroll systems.
- Demonstrated expertise managing international payroll operations across multiple countries.
- Proven track record of building, managing, and developing a high-performing payroll team.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, local, and international payroll laws and regulations.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Superior attention to detail, accuracy, and strong commitment to data integrity.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion and integrity.
Nice to Have
- Master's degree or relevant advanced certification.
- Experience within a SAAS or high-growth global technology company.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).
- Global Payroll Management Certificate (GPMI).
- Experience with AI or willingness to assess and leverage AI.
